Clarinet Instruction And Lessons

My experience with clarinet instruction was limited to high school band. Actually, I didn't even play the clarinet. I played the french horn, which was not my cup of tea. Although I play guitar, I always wanted to start learning the big band instruments. I decided that it would be easiest to learn clarinet. I bought a clarinet for about $179. Luckily, I ordered a beginner clarinet instruction and lessons video (actually a DVD). If I had not done that, then I would have never even been able to get it put together properly. The clarinet instruction and lessons dvd that I ordered went right from opening the case, through assembling it and making your first sounds. It showed some basic notes so that I could play a song by the end of the video (ok, I did pause it and rewind a couple of times). I caught on quick and then I got a fingering chart and learned the basic notes. This was great and kept me busy for a couple months. When it came time for me to start learning more complex clarinet notes and techniques, I went back and got another clarinet instruction and lessons DVD. I find it more effective than a live teacher. You can keep rewinding the video or DVD as many times as you want ... a teacher would get bored with that after a while ... and ... you can skip ahead if it is covering things you already know.

One of the things that I have realized is that, like other instruments, it is just a matter of getting started and then playing. I have learned many things just from the experience but the most important thing I did was to get a video to start off on the right foot. Learning by DVD is so much faster than any other way I have found, including private lessons.
